In a world of running that is often obsessed with VMA, chronos and curves, a French researcher has shaken up the rules of the game: Véronique Billat, a world-renowned physiologist, created the RABIT® test (for Running Advisor Billat Training).

The objective? Understand your engine better, without breaking it. This test is designed to assess your abilities in a fine, natural and progressive way, relying not on suffering, but on the perception and intelligence of the body.

🧠 No more standard tests, make way for tailor-made testing

While most running tests require you to run to exhaustion (VAMEVAL type, Demi-Cooper, etc.), the RABIT® Test takes the total opposite approach. Here, No fixed timer, no fixed pace, but a series of efforts of varying intensity, regulated by your own sensations.

This test is reproduced The real conditions of a race, with fluctuating pace, relaunches, recoveries, easy moments and others harder. In short, it assesses your adaptability, your effort management, your running economy and your tolerance for intensity.

📋 Concretely, how does that happen?

How the RABIT® test is carried out

  • The RABIT® Test lasts about forty minutes and is divided into several successive blocks of variable intensity running. Here is the logic of the session, as shown in the Billat Training visual:
    • We start with a 10-minute “Easy 1" phase, to warm up at a very comfortable pace.
    • We then continue with a 10-second sprint, to activate the neuromuscular system.
    • Then comes a first block of 5 minutes at a “Medium” pace, corresponding to a sustained but manageable pace.
    • One minute of slow recovery allows you to relax before attacking the heart of the test.
    • Then, we go up a notch with 3 minutes on the “Dure 1” walk, close to the VMA.
    • Before relaunching with a 30-second sprint, at maximum intensity.
    • And we finally end with 10 minutes back to calm at an “Easy 2" pace, to let the constants gradually return to normal.
    Each block is designed for stress a specific energy system, while allowing a controlled active recovery.

    What makes the RABIT® Test unique is not only its intelligent sequence. It is also the ultra-complete energy analysis which results from it.

    Thanks to your physiological responses (heart rate, speed, recovery, perceived effort), the test makes it possible to draw up a A true portrait of your runner profile. This profile is materialized by what Billat calls the Energy radar.
